The whitetail deer is probably the biggest direct competitor keeping small beef producers in the East locked out of the land access they need to grow.
One reason its harder to buy and sometimes even harder to merely lease fields/pastures that are extremely rugged/marginal and inaccesible even by the local standards is cause of all these goddamn hunters and other "recreational" landowners. They won't accept any amount of cash to have to look at/work with another person, all to themselves
