THE WOMAN WHO WAITED 12 YEARS When Daniel was 24, he met a woman named Sarah on a bus. She was crying. Not quietly. The kind of crying where you desperately try to hide your face because you don't want strangers asking questions. Daniel sat beside her. “You okay?” She shook her head. “No.” He didn't ask again. He simply handed her his handkerchief. She smiled through her tears. “Thank you.” That was the beginning. --- They started talking. Then texting. Then seeing each other almost every day. Within six months, Daniel knew he wanted to marry her. Sarah wanted the same thing. They made plans. They talked about children. They even picked names. Life felt perfect. Until one night, Sarah disappeared. No goodbye. No message. Nothing. Daniel called her phone hundreds of times. Disconnected. He went to her house. Empty. Her family had moved. It was as if she had never existed. --- Daniel spent months searching. Eventually, everyone told him the same thing: “Move on.” So he tried. He dated other women. He got a good job. Bought a house. Built a successful life. But he never married. Whenever someone asked why, he always gave the same answer: “I already gave my heart away.” People laughed. They thought he was being dramatic. He wasn't. --- Twelve years passed. Then one rainy evening, Daniel received a letter. No return address. Only his name. His hands trembled as he opened it. Inside was a photograph. It was Sarah. Older. But unmistakably her. Behind the photograph was one sentence: “I'm sorry I left. I had no choice.” Daniel immediately started crying. The letter continued. --- “Daniel, If you're reading this, I'm probably no longer alive. I need you to know that I never stopped loving you. The night I disappeared, I discovered I had cancer. The doctors gave me months. I couldn't watch you spend your life taking care of someone who was dying. So I left. I wanted you to hate me. I thought hatred would help you move on. I was wrong. I'm sorry.” Daniel couldn't breathe. Then he noticed another photograph. A little girl. About eleven years old. On the back were four words: “Her name is Emma.” --- Daniel's hands began shaking. The letter continued: “She is your daughter. I found out I was pregnant shortly before I left. I couldn't bring myself to tell you. I didn't want you to spend your life grieving me and raising a child alone. She's been raised by my sister. She's a wonderful girl. She knows about you. She has one question I've never been able to answer.” Daniel wiped his tears. He turned the page. The final sentence said: “She wants to know why her father never came back.” --- Daniel immediately drove to the address. His heart was pounding. A woman opened the door. Sarah's sister. She looked at him for a long time. Then she stepped aside. “She's been waiting.” Daniel walked inside. A young girl was sitting at the dining table. She looked up. Their eyes met. Daniel immediately knew. She had Sarah's eyes. The same smile. The same little dimple. The girl stood. “Are you Daniel?” He nodded. “Yes.” She looked nervous. “Are you my father?” Daniel couldn't speak. He simply opened his arms. She ran into them.
