Senior US House Democrat Gregory Meeks has said he will withhold approval for a proposed $2.8 billion US arms sale to Israel, citing “grave, unresolved concerns” over how the weapons could be used in densely populated areas of Gaza and Lebanon. Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the Trump administration had not provided sufficient assurances that the munitions would be used in accordance with US law and with protections for civilians. The proposed package reportedly includes 40,000 2,000-pound bombs. However, Meeks’ objection is unlikely to stop the sale, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio can invoke an emergency national security provision to bypass the usual congressional review.
