And his point was pretty blunt: The Gulf is packed with oil and gas infrastructure sitting out in the open, and American energy interests are just as exposed as Iran’s. That was aimed straight at Pete Hegseth, who called Iran’s tanker fleet “defenceless.” Then came the weekend. The U.S. hit 3 Iranian tankers, including one near Kharg Island, after the Revolutionary Guards went after U.S. warships. Now oil is near 6-week highs and Hormuz traffic is down to roughly 10 commodity vessels a day, the lowest since May. More than 6 months into the war, Washington and Tehran are still trading blows with no diplomatic breakthrough in sight. Both sides are betting the other runs out of room first.
