When American AI labs ingest copyrighted books, code, art and vast parts of the internet without individual permission, it is called fair use, innovation and training. When Chinese labs allegedly extract outputs from American models, suddenly “authorization” becomes sacred. And when China investigates whether its own users’ data was secretly routed to a U.S. model, Western media turns that into Beijing trying to impress Washington. No. China has every reason to investigate whether Chinese users’ data, corporate information and technical workloads were being passed to Anthropic without consent. That is privacy. That is data sovereignty. That is technological sovereignty. Not an olive branch. The American ego is so large that even China regulating its own AI industry gets rewritten as a gesture toward Washington.
