The studio was founded in 2021 by Toshihiro Nagoshi, creator of the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series, with backing from NetEase, Gang of Dragon, was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2025. In March, NetEase decided to stop funding the studio starting this month after learning the game would require an extra $44 million to finish. Nagoshi has sought new investors without success. The studio’s YouTube channel and trailers were also temporarily removed in April.
