The Nasdaq pulled back to its 21-day SMA, while the S&P 500 held up in a tight range above its 10-day SMA. The Russell 2000 rolled over and is once again trading below key long-term support at its 200-day SMA. Meanwhile, the Dow’s gap-up open quickly faded, turning early strength into a distribution day.
Market breadth continued to deteriorate, with only 140 new highs versus 557 new lows. Weakness among leading semiconductor names weighed on the Nasdaq. On a positive note, many of these stocks bounced late in the session, but it remains to be seen whether they can regain their footing and move higher.
Leading fiber-optic and photonics names that had been showing promise also broke down over the past few days, including LITE, VIAV, and CIEN. Unfortunately, oil and gas, materials, and utilities led the market today. Most leading software names continue to hold up well despite the recent weakness, while mega-cap technology stocks show relative strength. Beyond these areas, however, little in traditional growth is performing well.
The major indexes remain bifurcated, breadth continues to deteriorate, and leadership has weakened overall this week. I haven’t been stopped out of any positions, but the current market action has given me no reason to increase exposure.
For now, capital preservation takes priority over pressing for new opportunities. I’ll continue to monitor how leading growth stocks respond at key support levels and wait for the market to demonstrate renewed strength before taking on additional risk. Stay patient, respect your stops.
