Legend has it that a wealthy girl left this 49-character puzzle by the Yuxian Bridge, promising to marry whoever could decode it. A talented scholar finally cracked it, and they lived happily ever after.
Why was it so hard to solve?
At first glance, it looks like 49 scattered, chaotic characters, but it actually hides a 56-character poem. The reading method is brilliant: start from the center character "牛" (Niu) and read outward in a clockwise spiral. The most clever part is the "character-splitting" rule—the last character of each line must be split in half to start the next line. For example, taking the bottom half "月" (moon) from "期" leads to the next line: "月底弹琴又赋诗" (Playing the qin and writing poems under the moon).
Literature always manages to amaze us.😍🤗
