A duck bought on Facebook Marketplace did what a year of veterinary medicine couldn't. The Cannarellis of Long Island got Louie for their garden center. He'd hatched in an elementary school classroom, days old, no mother, no flock. He never made it to the garden center. He walked into the house and picked his flock himself. He picked Barley, their golden retriever. And Barley was the saddest animal in the home. Her seizure meds worked, but the same drugs that stop seizures damp the whole brain, so the family got a dog who was healthy and gone. No tail wags. No play. The vet's answer was to wait and hope. Ducks are flock animals to the bone. A duck with no flock adopts whatever creature is present and then refuses to leave it alone. Louie pecked at Barley, followed her, demanded play, hour after hour, every day. He would not accept a flatlined flockmate. Enrichment is the actual prescription for a dog dulled by seizure medication. The limit has always been supply. A human can give twenty minutes a day. A bonded flock animal gives nothing else, all day, for life. The medication stopped the seizures. The duck brought back the dog.
