It’s presented as a moral indictment of the West. A visual shortcut that says: this is what your prosperity caused. This is what your system produced. This is what you should feel responsible for. Over time, that framing gets reinforced in schools and institutions. History gets retold through a narrow lens. Students are taught to see Western civilization primarily through guilt - colonialism, exploitation, inequality - while the broader story of what actually changed global human conditions is either minimized or reframed. Borders get portrayed as moral failures. They don't teach the VERY reasons behind countries having borders. National identity gets treated with suspicion. Western development gets reduced to harm narratives. What gets left out is scale and outcome. Because while the story being taught is one of blame, the measurable reality is far more complex. Under industrial capitalism and global trade systems, billions of people have moved out of extreme poverty over time. Not evenly. Not perfectly. But undeniably. Countries like China, India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh have all seen massive reductions in extreme poverty in recent decades through industrial growth, export markets, and economic reform. Earlier industrial expansion in places like the United Kingdom helped establish the systems - manufacturing, finance, logistics, trade - that later became global frameworks adopted and adapted worldwide. The result is not a perfect system. No system is. But it is the first system in history that has consistently scaled material improvement across continents, at population levels never seen before. The tension sits here: One image shows suffering. The broader system shows movement - out of it. And both are part of the same story, whether it’s comfortable or not. Teach your kids the full history because schools won't. Give them resources to consume to gain a broader understanding of how the world works because they will tell them otherwise.
