Beijing’s Spies Are Not a Side Story. They Are the Strategy. The Chinese Communist Party is not “competing.” It is hunting. FBI Director Kash Patel told the Senate Judiciary Committee that over the past 18 months the Bureau neutralized 60 Beijing agents on U.S. soil. Nearly half of 130 counterintelligence arrests in that period were China cases, an 88 percent jump in CCP national-security prosecutions. This is not drift. It is a campaign. The Party’s method is simple: steal what it cannot invent, intimidate what it cannot buy, and hollow out what it cannot defeat. A Google engineer recruited through the Thousand Talents program tried to ship AI infrastructure secrets to China. Researchers in Michigan were caught attempting to smuggle biological material. A former U.S. Air Force pilot was arrested for feeding unauthorized defense information to Chinese military aviators. These are not rogue amateurs. They are instruments of a Leninist state that treats American labs, bases, and boardrooms as supply depots. Many still talk as if this were ordinary great-power friction. It is not, the CCP’s intelligence services exist to preserve one-party rule and to transfer other nations’ advantages to the Party. Estimates of China’s technology theft already run into the hundreds of billions of dollars a year. Every stolen model, every compromised pilot, every deported researcher is a down payment on a future in which Beijing does not have to out-innovate the West—only out-infiltrate it. Do not confuse the Chinese people with the apparatus that rules them. The target is the Party: its United Front networks, talent-recruitment schemes, military-civil fusion, and the polite fiction that “engagement” will civilize a system built on secrecy and coercion. Arrest numbers are rising because the threat is rising.
