i recently learned that it also was customary for generals from both sides to sit down together for dinner after a surrender
@JamesSurowiecki There are statues of George Washington in England, to say nothing of Cromwell. Japan has statues of pretty much every significant Samurai present at the Battle of Shiroyama.
You can find examples honoring men on the other side pretty much everywhere.
