Vertical bands of red, green, purple and brown wax-dyed silk are stitched alternately, attached to a wide red silk waistband, designed as a single wrap-around garment. Batik patterns feature pearl roundels, birds and scrolling vines, representing the peak of Tang textile dyeing craftsmanship. Imported to Japan via envoys to Tang, it served as court dance costume.
