OpenAI cutting off access to Cursor didn't just expose vendor risk, It exposed a product mistake a lot of AI tools still make: putting a model picker in front of the user. As a creator of an AI product, this event reminded us at CodeRabbit of why model choice should be handled by the product, not the user: > Most developers can't tell you which model performs best on a given task. The right answer changes by task, not by preference. A model dropdown doesn't empower the user, it just asks them to guess. > Every model you let people pick creates a habit and an expectation. That's the wrong thing to build when models improve, get deprecated, or get cut off. > Almost no one adopting these tools can effectively weigh cost vs. performance tradeoffs across models in real time. Given that, making the wrong choice is almost inevitable. Model choice and routing belongs inside the product, not in the UI. The best AI tools evaluate and select the right model for the task automatically, so results are optimized and stay consistent no matter which model is best fit for purpose today. Choice feels like control, but engineered routing actually is.
