Look, I’m all for even tougher new laws to constrain the power of tech oligarchs — but it’s also quite revealing that we’re being told that to stop AI oligarchs’ rampage and threats of human extinction we need new laws outlawing their unsafe products and potential for mass murder. The insinuation is that unsafe products and mass murder are actually legal right now, which they officially are not. So maybe what’s really being insinuated — and admitted — is that under existing laws and enforcement regimes, unsafe products and mass murder are in practice legal right now if those products and crimes specifically make the rich and powerful more rich and powerful. So in that sense, this entire AI discourse about needing new laws and regulations is the ruling class basically telling on itself.
