Most globally important UK Hqd company? Probably ARM Holdings, whose chip designs, rooted in Cambridge history of Acorn/ BBC Micro are now in 350 billion devices, it calculates. It has now shifted into making its own chips for AI data centres. Peaked at $400bn plus valuation earlier in the summer after being bought by SoftBank and floating on Nasdaq: Exclusive interview with CEO Rene Haas at its Cambridge HQ. Future of AI? Who wins - the cloud, or the devices/ robots? Are cheap open source models really capable of doing 90% of the frontier models? CPU or GPU? If Arm’s now making its own chips, why not the UK? Can other nations still invest in its place in AI supply chains like Taiwan with TSMC etc?
