For years I’ve wondered why we even pay sales tax when we eat at a restaurant. Eating shouldn’t be taxed. On top of that, having to leave a tip is pretty unreasonable too. Say lunch is $50. I shouldn’t have to add $7 in sales tax and another $10 for the tip. That’s at least $67 for one meal. For that money I can go to the supermarket and get beef, lamb, chicken, pork, shrimp, salmon — even lobster — plus fruit and vegetables. That’s enough food for a week. So why would I eat out? That’s why sit-down restaurants struggle while fast-food places do fine. Then Americans eat more burgers, drink more soda, get heavier, medical bills go up, and we get taxed even more.
