The stack that fills those roles has a sequence. Python properly. SQL and data handling, because most real AI engineering work is data work wearing an AI costume. Git, the command line, and basic Linux. REST APIs in production including what happens when the call fails. Embeddings and vector search. RAG was built end-to-end, not just described. The gap between people who can explain RAG and people who have actually built a working pipeline that handles real messy documents is the gap between candidates who get filtered out and candidates who get hired.
