Over the past 20 years, utility-caused wildfires in California have killed 140 people, destroyed more than 42,000 homes and businesses and caused more than $59 billion in insured losses. When a utility's equipment causes that kind of devastation, it should answer for it, and 84% of Californians agree that insurers should be able to recover those costs from the at-fault utility. Accountability also drives prevention: utilities with real financial exposure have stronger reasons to maintain their equipment and harden their systems. California's two largest utilities told Wall Street they'll put shareholders first if they don't get their way in the Legislature. The utility bailout would shield them from accountability, and lead to higher insurance costs for homeowners and deepen the insurance crisis.
