I've said many times that the abolitionist movement was not a Christian movement, as many were unitarians, universalists, and transcendentalists. Many did not believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, nor the authority of scripture. Another case in point: Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the lyrics to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, said this in her memoirs, published in 1899: "Not until the Civil War did I officially join the Unitarian church and accept the fact the Christ was merely a great teacher with no higher claim to preeminence in wisdom, goodness, and power than any other man."
