I'm in Bordeaux, having come here with my wife to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, and the smoke from the Gironde wildfire has reached the city -- our hotel room smells like a bonfire and there's ash in the air outside our window. But from what I can find out from Googling etc that is due to winds blowing in our direction from the west where the fire is raging, not because it's reached the outskirts of the city. It seems to be tracking the Cap Ferret peninsula and coastal pine forests, not moving toward the city. We're due to return to London tomorrow, but if the airport is closed and the fire is creeping closer to the city I hope there's an opportunity to help. Bordeaux is a beautiful city (a UNESCO world heritage site) and the left bank of the Gironde -- the same side as the fire -- is home to the best vineyards in the world.
