Lebanese Muslim Association spokesman Gamel Kheir says the practice is inclusive, because Islamic authorities always historically gave non-Muslims the choice to pay a special tax for protection. “If you return the call to prayer back to us, we leave you alone. If you don’t return the call to prayer, you have two choices: you either fight, or pay a tax for protection.” I reckon it’s really nice to be offered protection. Thank you Gamel.
