ALERT: Karen McGee was awarded almost $100,000 for an incident in an Austin airport that caused her to break her wrist, spend 2 nights in jail, and miss her flight. McGee, 71, was traveling from Florida to Seattle and had a layover at Austin Bergstrom International Airport in September 2022. McGee, who is hard of hearing, sat in front of her next gate and took out her hearing aids to block out some of the extra noise they pick up. After some time passed and no one began boarding at that gate, McGee realized she had missed an announcement that her gate had changed and her flight left without her. McGee switched from a Delta flight to an Alaska flight that didn't get in until 9 pm and approached the help desk to board an earlier flight. One gate agent was “dismissive,” and McGee tried to speak to another agent, who stated that McGee started yelling at her and that her breath reeked of alcohol. Austin Police Department stated McGee “chugged” wine and proceeded to arrest her, breaking her wrist in the process. McGee was held in the Travis County jail for 2 nights and was released after a judge reviewed the case and decided she should no longer be detained. McGee sued the city and won $92,500.
