House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is putting out fires within his own party with the midterms right around the corner. Jeffries is facing backlash from the far-left over a meeting with Jared Kushner, saying Trump’s son-in-law requested it and that he’ll continue to hold everyone in the administration accountable. Then there’s the Hasan Piker problem. The streamer has become an increasingly influential far-left voice despite a history of radical statements. After Piker recently claimed American Jews invite violence against themselves, Jeffries called the remark “dangerous and antisemitic,” breaking with a voice who has backed several socialist-aligned candidates. But as those candidates and figures become a bigger force in the party, Jeffries, who has historically kept them at a distance, is trying to balance the far-left with the Democratic establishment as he hopes to take the speaker’s gavel if Democrats win the House.
