Egypt launched the surprise attack on October 6, 1973, principally to reverse the territorial losses of the 1967 war. What is particularly important is that Anwar Sadat’s strategy was deliberately limited: Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and established positions in the Sinai rather than attempting a military conquest of Israel. Egypt celebrated the war as a victory because it broke the post-1967 status quo and recovered a foothold in the Sinai—not because it had launched a war to eradicate the Jewish state.
