"Every hour we spend down there will be seven years back on Earth." That line from Interstellar is the whole reason the photo hits so hard. Miller's planet orbits so close to the black hole Gargantua that gravity stretches time. Kip Thorne, the physicist who advised Christopher Nolan, set the rule the film uses. One hour on that ocean world equals about seven years on Earth. Interstellar opened in November 2014. Nearly twelve years have passed here since then. Divide those years by seven and you get roughly one hour and forty three minutes on Miller's planet. The clock in the photo is not a joke. It is the film's own math. Brand sees the wreckage and says, "On this planet's time, she landed here just hours ago. She might have died only minutes ago." Later she tells Cooper, "Time is relative. It can stretch and squeeze, but it can't run backwards." After the slingshot around Gargantua, Cooper says, "This little maneuver's gonna cost us 51 years." A short visit there costs decades everywhere else. The film never lets you forget it.
