On April 24, 2002, Michael Jackson gave what would become the last full concert of his lifetime at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. The show was billed as a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee’s Every Vote Counts campaign and was hosted by former President Bill Clinton. Before taking the stage, Jackson introduced his three children to Clinton backstage. Prince and Paris were five and four years old; his youngest, Prince Michael II who is nicknamed Blanket was just two months old. It was the first time the infant had been shown to anyone outside Jackson’s inner circle since his birth via surrogate in February 2002 at Grossmont Hospital in San Diego. The baby had been brought to Neverland on a private bus days later. Photographs from the backstage meeting circulated for years afterward, showing Jackson holding his newborn son while Clinton looked on. Diana Ross and her son Evan were also present that evening. The connection continued the next day. On April 25, Jackson traveled to Clinton’s post-presidential office in Harlem with his children, their nanny Grace, makeup artist Karen Faye, and actor Chris Tucker. They posed for another set of photographs inside the office. Seven months later, on November 20, 2002, Jackson held Blanket over the railing of a fourth-floor hotel balcony in Berlin. The incident drew international criticism and prompted a public apology in which Jackson described it as a terrible mistake. Against that later image,the one that largely came to define Blanket’s introduction to the world, the Apollo photographs captured something quieter and more ordinary: a father simply introducing his infant son to an old friend backstage before a show.
