Semiconductor weakness is no longer dragging down the broader market: On trading days where the semiconductor index, $SOX, fell at least -3.00%, the S&P 500 has declined just -0.78% on average this year. This is less than a third of the -2.38% average S&P 500 decline recorded during similar sessions in 2006-2025. Furthermore, software stocks posted positive returns during these selloffs, the first such occurrence since at least 2001. Even during days when $SOX dropped at least -2.00%, the S&P 500 fell just -0.70%, versus a -1.76% average decline over the past 20 years. In other words, semiconductor weakness has been offset by strength elsewhere in technology, keeping the broader market unusually resilient. Semiconductor weakness has become isolated as investors rotate into other parts of the tech sector.
