According to a MoneyLion analysis using Pew’s middle-class range, a $100K household income still sits in the lower-middle class in these states. A decade ago, $100K put a household in the top 25-30% of earners nationally. It usually meant a house, some savings, and a stable middle-class life. Cumulative inflation since 2015 has wiped out roughly 40% of that purchasing power, with basic necessities now eating most of a six-figure income in states like Hawaii, California, and Massachusetts. A fixed paycheck in cash does not keep up with sticky inflation, high public debt, and a steadily weaker dollar.
