Imagine we discovered a basement crammed with 100 crated animals, filthy from living in their own waste, maniacally chewing the bars of their crates in a hopeless attempt to escape.
We then learned their owner had cut off parts of their bodies — teeth, tails, testicles — with a blunt knife and no pain relief.
We'd call him a sadist, a psychopath, a monster. We'd prosecute him for felony animal cruelty.
Now imagine he called his basement a farm and added thousands more animals in worse conditions.
We'd call him a pork producer. And we'd grant him legal immunity from our animal cruelty laws.
