Abundance Institute's Neil Chilson on China's progress in open source: "China is running a little bit of a different race than the US. We always hear about the race between the US and China. The US, especially the frontier labs, they're pushing the frontier, racing towards AGI or ASI, trying to build massive all-capable models. I think China is much more interested in, how do we deploy this stuff across the economy?" "In that space, there are lots of models that are good enough, and sometimes you want them cheaper, smaller, faster, rather than all capable. You just want them good at one thing or a few things. So China is trying to deploy it into their ecosystem faster." "Domestically, I think we need to focus a little bit more on the implementation side, the diffusion of the technology. That's where the real benefits show up, in people's doctor's visits, their entertainment, their transportation. Then maybe people looking at data centers will think, oh, that's why I got my cancer scan three years earlier, instead of looking at them as a nuisance.
