🚨🇨🇳 U.S. NAVY IN PANIC: CHINESE AMPHIBIOUS SHIP APPEARS WITH LASER WEAPON
China has shown what analysts identify as its LY-1 shipborne laser aboard the Type 071 amphibious transport dock Qilianshan during an August 1 joint drill around Scarborough Shoal. If the identification is correct, the PLA Navy has taken a new layer of close-range defense into one of the South China Sea’s most contested areas.
🔸 CCTV footage shows a rectangular turret behind the ship’s 76mm gun. Retired Taiwanese naval officer Lu Li-shih identified it as likely LY-1; the PLA did not name the device in the footage.
🔸 China publicly displayed LY-1 at its September 2025 Victory Day parade. A Chinese military journal described it as a last line of defense for intercepting drones and incoming missiles after longer-range defenses have been penetrated.
🔸 That role fits a Type 071 landing ship. Qilianshan carries troops, tanks and landing craft toward the coast, where slower maneuvering and unloading can expose it to cheap aerial drones and unmanned boats.
🔸 A laser uses ship-generated electricity instead of expending a missile on every small target. With sufficient power and cooling, it can engage repeatedly without drawing on the task force’s fixed missile magazine.
🔸 Qilianshan is the second Type 071 seen with a similar system after Simingshan. That suggests China is expanding shipboard integration beyond a single hull, although the footage does not establish the weapon’s combat readiness.
🔸 Laser defenses still have limits. Fog, rain and sea spray can weaken the beam, so LY-1 would add a close-range layer rather than replace missiles and guns.
The practical effect is straightforward: drone swarms become a harder and more expensive way to overwhelm a Chinese landing force, while escorting warships preserve their missiles for faster or more dangerous threats.
