Unlike in America, European popular anger at immigration doesn't appear to be cyclical. If European leaders don't become more restrictive, they could be tossed out in favor of the far right.
It's easy to underestimate how anti-immigration western voters are: 60% of European voters want immigration cut significantly, while only 25% of MEPs do. Across Europe, the average MP is about 1 standard deviation more pro-immigration than their voters.
