Japanese developers are starting to openly admit that Korean studios are catching up fast, especially in AAA game development.
At G-CON 2025, NieR creator Yoko Taro said that โa lot of Korean developers are ahead of Japanโ when it comes to technology. Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya also expressed concerns over Japan being โleft behind.โ
Games like Crimson Desert are a big reason why people are taking those comments seriously. Korean studios are now making huge AAA games that can compete directly with Japanese and Western titles.
Japanese developers are not reacting with hostility. Kamiya even said, โThe more creators we see coming out of Korea who are making one-of-a-kind games, the more itโll raise the bar for the entire video game scene worldwide.โ
