Microsoft is facing backlash after laying off around 4,800 employees, including 1,600 from Xbox, while receiving approval for 2,273 H-1B visa workers in 2026.
People argue the H-1B program is being used to replace American workers with lower-cost labor.
Microsoft disputes the idea that the layoffs were directly tied to H-1B hiring. A company spokesperson said:
โThese decisions are based on business need, not visa status. H-1B employees were also impacted by job eliminations in the U.S.โ
