🦠MONSTERS INSIDE ME🦠 I love watching the show, “Monsters Inside Me,” which is about parasites. While listening to an episode, I heard something that caught my attention — “Ivermectin.” Dr. Geza Teleki contracted onchocerciasis (river blindness) after being bitten by a black fly in Sierra Leone. While he was first prescribed a drug to kill the larvae in his body, Onchocerca volvulus worms can live for up to 15 years in humans. He suffered for 5 years as the worms spread throughout his body, including his eyes. In 1985, Dr. Martin Wolfe gave him an experimental drug & Geza became the first American to be treated with Ivermectin. After a week, Geza was examined by an eye physician; to both of their surprise, the worms were dead. “I will always be grateful for what [Dr. Martin Wolfe] did to deal with this river blindness.” Remember when the media when on a rampage to discredit Ivermectin & even try to simplify it as just “horse dewormer”? Scientists William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura received the Nobel Prize for their discovery of avermectin, which led to Ivermectin— the cure to river blindness.
