🚨 Stalked for Two Days, Punched on Camera, Then a Flight to Busan: Beijing's Long Arm Just Hit Taichung The attacker cased the hotel lobby for two straight days. He waited. He struck. Then he changed clothes and sprinted for a flight to South Korea. This was no bar brawl. On Monday in Taichung, veteran journalist and Indo-Pacific Strategic Thinktank CEO Akio Yaita was punched in the mouth seconds after finishing a keynote on cross-strait relations at the Tempus Hotel. The assailant, a 33-year-old China-born man surnamed Liao, holds a Hong Kong ID. Staff say he had been circling the venue since Sunday. Taichung police collared him at Taichung International Airport as he tried to board a Busan-bound flight. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) labeled it the first suspected case of transnational repression on Taiwanese soil since Beijing's Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law took effect on July 1. That timing is not coincidence. That escape route through a third country is not improvisation. Both fit a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) playbook that Freedom House and Safeguard Defenders have documented from Bangkok to Los Angeles: pre-positioning at a target's venue, a single deniable strike, then cross-border exfiltration before local authorities close the net. Yaita has spent a career dissecting Beijing's opacity, Xi Jinping's purges, and the CCP's coercion of the Chinese diaspora. He took Taiwanese citizenship in 2024. He now leads a think tank Beijing plainly loathes. The fist that landed in Taichung was not meant for him alone.
