There is a new spring sport taking hold across Baltimore-area high schools. It does not have officials. It does not have a rulebook that anyone can fully explain. It does, however, have rankings, rosters, playoff byes, cheating accusations and at least one controversy involving Hey Dude shoes. It’s hacky sack. Students have turned a lunch-period pastime into something resembling a sport. They stand in circles outside school, keep a small beaded ball alive with their feet, post the best clips to Instagram and argue over which school has the best “sack” program.
