New York’s attorney general is STILL holding $19.3 million that Catholic nuns earned selling THEIR OWN HOME!! ⠀ The Sisters of Divine Providence housed women at 253 West 24th Street in Chelsea. The house opened in 1896 as the Jeanne d’Arc Home for Friendless French Girls. ⠀ The sisters have been on that block since 1898. They sold it Oct. 29, 2024, for $22.5 million cash to John Catsimatidis’s Red Apple Group. ⠀ He wants apartments next to his 280 Eighth Avenue project. State law made Letitia James sign off before a charity could sell a building that size. ⠀ She approved the deed and released $2.7 million for carrying costs the order had already paid. She also cleared about $446,000 for taxes and broker fees. ⠀ The leftover net is $19,316,727. That money is still parked with New York more than two years later. ⠀ Lawyer Christine Sama wrote the state in January that the cash would fund the same ministries and care for aging sisters at Holy Family Home in Melbourne, Kentucky. James’s office told The Free Press the order never sent a spend breakdown. ⠀ Sama said officials then called Kentucky care “not sufficiently similar.” The AG’s 2024 approval letter already refused any other use and flagged cy-pres and related-party concerns. ⠀ A 2021 case had to kill an 1896 deed restriction that tried to lock the land to French-speaking girls forever.
