Border control in the Netherlands would always judge me by saying:
"You live here for 8 years and only barely speak the language?"
Sir, the fact that you just asked me this in perfect English is kind of the root of the problem here.

@igor_os777 When I first moved to the Netherlands people who heard my English accent immediately switched to English which hampered my learning of the language. So, when someone switched to English, I carried on replying in Dutch. My stubborn persistence eventually led to me becoming fluent.
