❗️According to Reuters, the UK, Norway and the US disrupted secret spring drills near Svalbard, where Russia’s Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (GUGI) practised a new technology to disable undersea cables without leaving traces. Allies tracked the submarines and deep-sea vehicles, stopped the exercise before any cables were damaged, and confronted Moscow with the findings. The operation targeted two 1,400 km fibre-optic links to mainland Norway, which run as deep as 2,700 metres and carry data from SvalSat, the world’s largest satellite ground station and part of NASA’s Near Space Network. Norwegian Defence Minister Tore Sandvik said the joint action showed Russia that covert attacks on critical infrastructure would be detected and met with consequences.
