We must maintain the strongest military in the world. That is the best protection against anything you see today or that you don’t see today. And foundational to that is the best economy in the world. They’ve got to go hand-in-hand. If you want to keep the dollar as the reserve currency, if we’re not the preeminent military and the preeminent economy in the world in 30 years, we will not be the preeminent reserve currency. Economic allies are critical. We have a huge, huge common interest. We have a common value system and common interests. We should protect each other. We should go to Europe and say, ‘If you do the right things, we’ll give you one big, beautiful free-trade deal.’ They’re struggling. They’re literally slowly walking off a cliff over time, and they need our help. I want to keep it together. I’d like to make those economic ties stronger, not weaker.”
