At a $61.5 billion post-money valuation, it was, by more than an order of magnitude, the highest price I'd ever paid for a venture investment. It seems like an obvious call in retrospect, but at the time the gross margins were much lower than they are now, the cost of training models was very high, and, even if Anthropic was able to attract enough capital, it was still in question whether they could catch up to OpenAI.
