The Helium team filed formal comments with the
@FCC on the future of 911. Emergency interoperability should be built on open standards, not proprietary interfaces. The best available network that can carry emergency traffic should be able to help.
Helium has already shown this in action. During Hurricane Helene, over 80% of cell sites in the hardest-hit parts of western North Carolina went offline and Team Rubicon built Helium beacons into its mobile recovery units. In Redondo Beach, carrier offload on the city's existing Wi-Fi reconnected a district that high-rise buildings had cut off for years. Helium delivered robust and reliable connectivity to that community, down to the police department basement with no new hardware or capital expenditure necessary. While not an emergency, Mardi Gras showed Heliumโs capacity as the Network absorbed a 550% traffic surge and served over 100,000 additional users through standards-based handoff, with no carrier intervention required.
That's what open interoperability looks like in the field. Major carriers route subscriber traffic through Helium infrastructure every day, and first responders can confidently rely on it when the tower network fails.
