“Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love”
- Claude Monet
Claude Monet was a French artist and a leading founder of the Impressionist movement. Born in Paris in 1840, he became celebrated for portraying landscapes, gardens, and scenes of everyday life with an emphasis on light, atmosphere, and color.
Monet frequently painted the same subjects under different lighting and weather conditions to capture their changing appearance. His famous Impression, Sunrise helped inspire the name “Impressionism.” He later created his iconic water lily paintings at Giverny before his death in 1926 at age 86.
