OpusClip charges $15 a month to turn long videos into shorts. A guy named Juan built an open-source alternative you can run on your own computer for free. It is called OpenShorts. Upload a podcast, webinar, interview, or livestream. It transcribes the video, studies the scene changes, and uses Gemini to suggest 3 to 15 moments worth clipping. Then it: > cuts each moment into a 15 to 60-second clip. > reframes it for vertical 9:16 video. > tracks faces so the speaker stays in frame. > burns in word-level subtitles. > adds hook text and optional effects. > publishes to TikTok, Reels, and YouTube Shorts. The self-hosted version uses the MIT license. There is no watermark, subscription, or built-in usage cap. The honest catch is that you need Docker, at least 8GB of RAM, and your own API keys. A normal CPU also takes roughly 5 to 8 minutes to process an 8-minute video. But your raw footage stays on your machine, and your clipping software becomes something you own instead of another monthly rental.
