I used to think bankruptcy happened to people who were careless with money. I was wrong. It started with one small loan. I wanted to expand my business, so I borrowed money. The business grew quickly, and for a while, everything looked perfect. I bought better equipment, hired more people, and even moved into a bigger house. Then one customer failed to pay me. I thought, “It’s okay. I’ll recover next month.” Then another customer disappeared with a huge unpaid bill. Suddenly, I was borrowing money just to pay the previous loans. The bank called constantly. My employees needed salaries. My landlord wanted rent. Suppliers wanted their money. And every morning, I woke up pretending everything was under control. I sold my car. Then I sold my equipment. Then I started selling things from my house. Still, the debts kept growing. The worst part wasn’t losing my money. It was watching people who once called me a successful business owner stop answering my calls. Eventually, I couldn’t pay anything anymore. The business collapsed. My savings were gone. My house was gone. My confidence was gone. One morning, I sat alone in an empty room, staring at the few things I had left. That’s when I realized something painful: I hadn’t gone bankrupt in one day. I had gone bankrupt slowly one bad decision, one unpaid bill, and one borrowed shilling at a time. But that wasn’t the end of my story. It was the beginning of learning how to rebuild from nothing.
