I’ve been trying Dot. Some early thoughts and anecdotes, in no particular order:
• I’ve been using it to make a system to auto-deploy branch previews for in progress work of my personal site (so I can work on it and check from my phone) through my “old” M1 Mac mini home server.
• I also had it document all of my mini’s responsibilities and systems in Notion.
• I kept waiting it to show up on my phone’s ChatGPT app until I accidentally realized I had to onboard through the desktop app, which I use a lot more at work than I do on my personal laptop.
• The onboarding was very easy and it was immediately clear it could use my computer on top of its own. This made me think of adding it to my mini! Very nice.
• I wish it could connect to more than one computer, like remote Codex.
• Overall, it’s nice! I like not having to think about threads and I love having the option of an agent reacting “✅” to a message instead of the usual lengthy confirmation responses and “Do you want me to…?” type messages.
• At one point it got stuck for hours with no statuses or updates. Makes sense that
@hollllyli’s Dot mentioned a big early theme was reliability in today’s demo.
• The UI execution is great, I love how familiar to Messages this feels like and being able to have light sub-threads if I’m doing two things at once.
• I have yet to see the value of it proactively being helpful. It may just be too early for that.
• I wonder if and how a product like this could eventually cross the barrier of personal and work accounts. I am able to do so much more of my personal projects from my phone than my work ones.
• Custom rules are cool!
• Going from ChatGPT introducing a separate “Agent” option on their + menu to this product existing (amongst many others in the industry) within only a year is crazy.
