I signed this. I spend much of my time thinking about how AI could help create a better future and making small steps towards that future. But if AI starts accelerating AI research itself, the pace of progress cannot be set by whoever is willing to move fastest. No single lab can safely govern the pace of AI self-improvement on its own–we need to build the capacity for international coordination and control mechanisms.
Pacing the frontier does more to secure the positive AI future than to risk it. I’m glad this is consensus across labs.

At the core of our mission is working through how to ensure increasingly powerful AI benefits everyone.
We believe that, at some point in the future, AI acceleration for frontier model development may be so high that the world will need to pace the rate of AI advancement.
We hope to contribute to work led by the U.S. government, alongside other labs and the open-source community, to develop the tools and mechanisms that could make that possible.
