History was made on July 16, 1972 when Hawaii's own Takamiyama became the first-ever foreign wrestler to win a Grand Sumo tournament in Japan. President Nixon sent a congratulatory telegram, and Pan Am’s Far East Manager David Jones loudly proclaimed "Hyo-sho-jo!" while presenting the massive trophy, an event that became an iconic scene in Japanese history. By breaking through the walls of tradition, Takamiyama became more than a champion; he became a bridge between cultures and an enduring symbol of the bond between Japan and the United States.
